Alcahest is an action game with a top-down perspective that plays similar to The Legend of Zelda. It is divided into 8 stages that are progressed by finding items that aid the protagonist Alen on his quest, and end with a boss battle. After specific boss fights, the player gains the abilities of one of the four elemental Guardians. Alen will also find five allies that join him at predetermined points of some levels. They are the young wizard Garstein, the princess Elikshil, the knight Sirius, the android Magna and the shape-shifter dragon goddess Nevis. Though they cannot be controlled directly, allies attack and use special moves when the corresponding button is pressed.

A great action RPG by HAL Laboratories and Squaresoft. You play as Alen, a typical silent protagonist who is chosen to retrieve some legendary swords and defeat the evil god Alcahest. Along your journey you’ll meet five unique characters, including a sarcastic wizard, a hot princess, a knight, a cyborg and a shapeshifting dragon goddess who will become your partner for one stage and later you can choose one to join you for the final stage.

The gameplay is straightforward hack-and-slash and offers little challenge except for a few boss battles, where your sword will be ineffective and you must use your special abilities carefully. The English translation here is excellent and for the short time you spend with each character – even the badguys – they all manage to make an impression.

The graphics are great, and the sweeping orchestral soundtrack (by Jun Ishikawa, of Kirby fame) is absolutely amazing. If you want a game that feels just as epic as Final Fantasy but only takes two hours to beat, look no further than Alcahest.

NOTE: the translated password system is somewhat confusing. Passwords are stage titles such as “Run through the fortress” and “Beat the Dark Dragon” and you must enter them exactly as they appear on the title card before each stage, with correct capitalization. However, some stage titles actually have spelling errors like “Boarding the anitaircraft” (which should be “antiaircraft”) so be aware of that. Also, to create a space between each word you must select one of the blank spaces after Z in the alphabet- if you use the L/R buttons to scroll left/right and then select a letter, it won’t be displayed. You have to enter a password correctly because there is no “back” option to return to the title screen. If you mess up you just have to reset the console.
